Do I keep my accounts and content if I stop working with SmallBizSEO?

SmallBizSEO’s policy is that clients retain their accounts and produced articles. Verify client-controlled account roles and access before removing agency permissions.

Yes. SmallBizSEO's policy is that clients own their accounts and retain access if the working relationship ends. When SmallBizSEO sets up an account for a client, the client is added with the appropriate control for that platform so the agency's access can be removed without taking away the client's access.

Keep client access through handover

Client account handover: retain the client-owned account, confirm appropriate owner or admin control, remove provider access and verify retained access.

SmallBizSEO’s account ownership policy with a practical access-handover sequence. Check actual roles and third-party terms for each platform.

  • Client-owned account: The client retains the account when service ends.

  • Appropriate client control: Confirm working owner or admin access for the platform.

  • Remove provider access: Agree the change and follow platform-specific steps.

  • Verify retained client access: Check the client can still use the account and key functions.

This explains the policy, not an audit of existing permissions. Third-party licences and subscriptions may have separate terms.

Check the role, not just the invitation

Permission names differ between tools. A platform may use owner, administrator, manager, or user for different levels of access. Being able to view a report is not necessarily the same as being able to manage the account or remove a provider.

For example, Google Search Console distinguishes owners from full and restricted users. Owners can manage other users; a full user is not the equivalent of an owner. A property needs at least one verified owner. Before removing a provider, confirm that the business has its own verified ownership, not merely delegated-owner or full-user access. If all verified owners are removed, remaining users and delegated owners can lose access.

What happens to articles?

The SmallBizSEO website's content-ownership answer states that articles produced for you are owned by you, published under your brand, and remain in your content library if you stop the service.

That statement is about produced articles. It should not be read as a promise that every third-party tool, stock asset, software licence, hosting plan, or other resource has the same ownership or transfer terms. Ask about any specific item you need to retain. The Terms of Service also apply.

A practical access handover checklist

  • List the accounts: record the platform, business property or workspace, and the client-controlled contact. Do not put passwords or verification secrets in an ordinary shared checklist.

  • Test your access: sign in with your own account and confirm you can reach the correct business property and the settings you need.

  • Review dependencies: identify billing, domain, hosting, measurement, reporting, and other services that may have separate subscriptions or permissions.

  • Confirm the change: agree which agency access should be removed and who will perform the platform-specific steps. Review completed materials and any work still in progress before making changes that could interrupt service.

  • Check again afterward: confirm the business can still use its accounts and that important website and measurement functions still work.

For Search Console, removing a verified owner can also require reviewing that person's verification tokens. Those tokens may affect other Google services, so follow Google's current ownership-removal guidance rather than deleting unfamiliar records or files blindly.

Ask about your actual setup

This FAQ explains the policy; it is not an audit of your existing account permissions. If you want to confirm a specific account, article, or handover item, use the SmallBizSEO contact page and name the platform or item. Never send account passwords in an ordinary message.
